Healing from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

What is PTSD?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed traumatic events (either in a once-off or ongoing manner) or who have found themselves in traumatic circumstances. A wide range of experiences can result in the development of PTSD, and a lack of education can also keep people from recognising its symptoms.

If you’ve been diagnosed with PTSD, you’ll know all too well the impact of a dysregulated nervous system.

PTSD causes the nervous system to get stuck in either ‘fight-or-flight’ or ‘freeze’. For some, this results in debilitating exhaustion. For others, it leads to a state of complete inner collapse.

Many people don’t realise just how functional individuals with diagnosed PTSD can be. As a result, individuals suffering from PTSD’s impacts can lack access to transformational treatments, leaving people isolated and alone in their experience.

In the immense pain of this state, many people turn to self-medication, which can often lead to an ongoing addiction.

At Hope in Health, we work to heal the trauma, not the symptom.

By addressing the underlying symptoms of PTSD-related substance abuse, we gently, lovingly support you as you experience what it is like to have a regulated nervous system.

Our multidisciplinary team of practitioners are committed to developing targeted skills and techniques that bring your nervous system out of the intolerable distress that PTSD has created and into regulation.

How PTSD treatment can help you

Our first priority in any PTSD treatment process is for you to experience true safety. In our unique, welcoming and supportive environment, you’re accepted into the kind of relief necessary for ongoing rehabilitation.

Safety isn’t always familiar for individuals with PTSD, because your nervous system lacks the necessary tools to recognise it. In your first week with our team, we focus on helping you to return to your body. You’ll experience calm, peace and safety, the foundation of your journey towards a regulated future.

In your stay at Hope in Health, our holistic, integrated approach to PTSD treatment focuses on building the tools you need for ongoing regulation in your everyday environment. They become the foundation for continuous long-term work, focusing on your immediate needs and a proactive, supported plan for your future.

When you possess the innate understanding you need to become (and remain) regulated, you’ll be much less likely to reach for the coping mechanisms used during dysregulation.

Our integrated, holistic treatments empower you with the education, insight and understanding you need to experience genuine peace. Our clients find transformational relief, the removal of shame, and the ability to build self-compassion through our PTSD treatments and healing methodologies.

How common is PTSD?

Phoenix Australia reports that PTSD is the most common mental health condition in Australia after depression, with approximately 5-10% of Australians suffering from PTSD at some point in their lives. This equates to over 1 million Australians living with PTSD on a daily basis.

While we’re likely to recognise PTSD in cases where people have survived overt danger or disaster – such as war or natural disasters – PTSD is so common, in part, because of its quiet, unanticipated occurrence in many who experience it.

With so many Australians suffering from undiagnosed PTSD, the link between self-medication and addiction developments is evident. It’s just one of the reasons we’re so passionate about treating the root of trauma in our PTSD rehabilitation programs.

The Stats

A 2020 editorial by Australasian Psychiatry, “Post-traumatic stress disorder in Australia: 2020”, spoke to the likelihood of a higher prevalence of PTSD in the general population than previously reported. This followed nationwide bushfire disasters, a global pandemic and the effects of quarantine leading to post-traumatic stress symptoms for many Australians. This report also detailed paid and voluntary members of emergency services personnel reaching an estimated prevalence rate of 10%, with Australian Defence Force personnel estimated at 8.3%. Australian military veterans also report increasingly higher rates of PTSD, with 17.7% of personnel experiencing PTSD over the first 4 years following their discharge. These statistics, while sobering, don’t include the levels of PTSD present in everyday Australians impacted by trauma that has resulted in ongoing symptoms. With PTSD on the rise, it’s never been more important for us to find holistic healing methodologies that provide genuine relief and rehabilitation from its debilitating effects.

Impact of Untreated PTSD

Living with untreated PTSD can be an extremely painful experience. Individuals with untreated PTSD are often caught in dysregulated states, with a nervous system that’s unable to escape fight, flight or freeze mode. This can result in either extreme exhaustion, where individuals are unable to function in their day-to-day environments, or in a state of numbness, removing the ability to experience joy, love and peace. When these extremely painful feelings become too much to bear, it’s common for individuals with untreated PTSD to turn to drugs or alcohol in an attempt to self-medicate. This can result in issues such as domestic violence, burn-out, increased risks of suicide, depression, neglect and more.
