Chris Lancaster

Senior Carer

It was his lived experience with addiction that led Chris Lancaster to follow a career path in addiction recovery, and ultimately his role as Senior Carer at Hope in Health. Moving from a background in construction, he completed a Diploma of Mental Health and, for more than a decade, worked with community organisations that fight against addiction.

Chris strongly believes that recovery doesn’t have to be boring and he brings this to everything he does at Hope in Health.

“The guests are absolutely in a crisis situation, but I help them to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he says.

“I encourage them to put their hand up to try new things and break through the fear. When they let go of the fear, they find new interests and meaning in their lives.”

For Chris, helping the guests to translate what they’re learning in therapy into day-to-day life is the most rewarding part of his role.

“Our guests often feel like they’ve only got one door to walk through, one path to follow,” he explains.

“But then we start to expand their individual windows of tolerance and they start to realise that there are multiple doors they can choose from.”
