Jamie

Psychotherapist

While initially studying psychology to work with athletes like himself, Jamie Hicks ventured down a different path. His own mental health challenges compelled him to study social work, after which he spent many years working in acute and emergency mental health in hospital settings. Jamie comes to Hope in Health from private practice where he has extensive experience working with veterans and first responders.

“I really felt so honoured to work with this group of people,” he says.

“I have so much respect for their drive, passion and the sacrifices they have made.”

Jamie’s approach is a person-centred one. Working alongside his colleagues who share a similar ethos, Jamie uses a range of trauma-informed therapies, including EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing). Ultimately, he understands that if a guest feels heard and valued, they’re more likely to engage with the professional in front of them.

I work with people who have obtained a psychological injury because of the work that they’ve been asked to do,” he explains.

“That injury has resulted in them being cut out of the service. Very suddenly, they’ve had to tussle with the idea of loss. I spend a lot of time reminding them that their injury is not who they are. Their injury doesn’t define them.”
